Headed by one of Haltia’s environmental educators, a Nature School visit for school classes usually lasts for one school day, 4-5 hours. The class may also come to Haltia independently, in which case Haltia’s guides can, upon request, take the pupils on a tour of Haltia’s exhibitions.
The primary target group of the Nature School is 3rd–9th grade pupils. Two of our programs are also suitable for secondary schools. During the whole school year we arrange nature school days free of charge for school groups from the Helsinki metropolitan area. The application time for Haltia’s free of charge nature school days in 2022–2023 has ended. More information in finnish on the “Haku ja varaukset” page. Stay informed, please subscribe our newsletter. The instruction is usually in Finnish or Swedish, but you can also ask about availability of English instruction. The maximum group size for a nature school day is 25 pupils.
Nature instruction with an environmental educator
The nature school day is led by Haltia’s environmental educator who takes the students out into nature for activities, experiences, inspiration and learning. The group may choose between six themes. During the nature school day the students eat their own food by the nature schools own camp fire site. In the theme focusing on hiking skills, pupils learn to prepare food with camping cookers.
The program of the nature school day includes for instance hiking, studying nature, games, green drama and adventure pedagogy. The nature school day includes a short guided visit in Haltia’s exhibitions. The Nature School applies a diverse outdoor education pedagogy, and the programs support the comprehensive school curriculum.
Independent nature studies
School classes can also visit Haltia independently with the option of making use of the excursion programmes designed by Haltia’s environmental educators on their own excursions. The groups who follow the excursion programmes independently may borrow or rent the required equipment from Haltia. Haltia’s Nature School also arranges training for educators and teachers on the themes of the independent excursions as well as hiking skills.
