“Traditional techniques and tools are closest to my heart because of their long history and the storytelling intertwined with mythology. Over the years, the Kalevala and Finnish mythology have become increasingly significant parts of my work.
I bring forth the forging culture and technically high-quality art crafted by artisans, and I do my part to preserve the disappearing skills of traditional craftsmen.” and I do my part to preserve the disappearing skills of traditional craftsmen.”

“In ancient times, knowledge was passed on through teaching, rune singers, and stories. I hope that through my works I can offer something similar: to awaken, through art, an appreciation of the warmth and strength in our roots. To bring the stories to life. To touch the dormant respect for our heritage.”

Kirsi Vahtera, a master blacksmith and designer from Lahti, was awarded the title of Artistic Blacksmith of the Year in 2020. She has also created the jewelry series My Brother and The Maiden’s Axe.

In her work, she uses the essence and strong character of iron as a means of expression. Her working technique is mainly traditional blacksmithing, but modern metalworking methods are also utilized in production. Vahtera aims to highlight figures from our mythology, goddesses fading from our collective memory, and equality.
